Cher Lynn: Music
Mema (Lorraine)
(Cher Lynn)
I wrote this song for the matriarch of our family, my Mema Lorraine, on her birthday last year. She has an unbelievable amount of children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren, so what in the world do you get someone who has gotten every gift under the sun over the years?
You write them a song.
I was so happy that this one got picked to be on the first CD. (I think that Mema may be just a little bit proud, too!)
Mema (Lorraine)
She was born in the South about 1932
In a little old house around the way
Everyone knew when that baby girl cried
What a woman she would be someday
She met a boy named Billy
God, he loved her so
She had a smile that would light up the room
Everywhere she’d go
Chorus Whatever you call her Lorraine or Mema or
Sister, Mom, friend or your spouse
She’s smart and she funny
She’s lively and lovely
She’s the bona fide head of the house
That’s my Mema
Billy asked her, “Would you marry me, girl”
“And take my hand for life?”
She said, “Yes I love you, boy”
“I will be your wife.”
Billy became a military man
They were young and happy lovers
So far away from their family
But all they needed was each other
Well the babies they came one by one
A little boy and four little girls
Didn’t always have everything they wanted
But they had all they needed in this world
Cause Mema was strong and she loved those kids
She taught them all they needed to know
Compassion and caring and laughter and sharing
Were all the things they needed to grow
Chorus
Many years went by and the time it did fly
Around the world they did roam
And wherever their travels led them Lord
Mema made a happy home
Now their kids grew up, had kids of their own
And they all moved back to see her
Now we live together in this little bitty town
And we all take care of each other
Because of Mema
